Meet the AP artist: Tanya Miller

Tanya Miller, senior, is one of the many crazy talented artists in the AP art program at Homestead High School. While she very much enjoys art, she plans to go into the medical field in college. If she could go into art she would love to be a Disney Animator. “I have found that art is a great way of expressing yourself; however, the most important reason for me (continuing in art) was that I wanted to challenge myself. As a kid, I would watch documentaries on the production of Disney animations and try to replicate them. A secret that many viewers aren’t aware of however, is that many of the early animations were painted, not drawn. That is one particular reasons for my dedication to the arts program, and specifically painting class,” Miller said.

Through painting she has felt that she has really improved. “I mean I had only begun painting my junior year and I could barely paint a line yet alone an ocean. For the time frame that I have spent in painting class, I have come a long way,” Miller said. Right now she has found some of her favorite pieces to be “several characters that I have created, that are far from the norm of the princess. These characters stretch that norm by being of different ethnicity, having body figures of all shapes and sizes, and many other important characteristics that make them unique,” Miller said.

As for her personal artistic style she has said that “people tend to say my style reflects Impressionistic movement with a dash of Disney. What I think they mean is my play of colors tend to reflect Disney’s pure and simple colors. I love using the entire spectrum, but what I admire most are colors such as green and blue.”

She understands that she is an artist in not only painting but in other mediums as well. “Everything is art if you think of it. If it is a form of expression then it definitely is. Whether it is putting together an outfit, or making a culinary cuisine or even just some toast with cinnamon butter and sugar on it is quite a work of art. If you put your mind to it, you are an artist,” Miller said.
