Tournaments abound during the holiday season

It’s a quiet week for Homestead sports, with nothing on the athletic calendar until Friday.

The boys swim team took on Arrowhead and Nicolet last week, falling to Arrowhead but achieved victory against Nicolet. They do not compete this week, but will face off against multiple teams outside its conference (such as Marquette, Arrowhead) Dec. 30 in a home varsity invitational meet at 10 a.m.

Emerging victorious from their meet against Nicolet, the wrestling team looks to continue their winning streak in a tournament at Slinger High School on Jan. 6 at 9 a.m.

The girls gymnastics team defeated Grafton and Cedarburg last Wednesday in their first meet of the season. “We just tell the girls to do their best and stick their routines. A routine in a meet is no different than one in practice,” Tori Puhl, senior and team captain, said. The team does not compete again until after break, but will take on Nicolet and West Allis on Jan. 7 at 6 p.m. at home.

The boys basketball team, coming off a 63-41 victory over Cedarburg, will take on Muskego, New Berlin West and West Bend West this Friday at home. The tournament will continue into Saturday.

The girls basketball team faced off against two tough opponents this week, most recently falling to Cedarburg by 4 points. Their next game will be against Milwaukee Lutheran at home on Jan. 6. at 6 p.m.

After a 2-1 victory over Fox Cities, the Lakeshore Lightning girls hockey team will compete in a two-day varsity tournament against Arrowhead on Saturday and Sunday at the Rhinelander ice arena. “I’m really excited to to play Arrowhead again. I can’t wait to show them what we’ve got for a third time,” Katie Gebhardt, sophomore, said.

After a loss to the Monona Grove Silver Eagles, the boys hockey team will take on Arrowhead on Saturday at the Bradley Center as look to defend their Admiral Cup Championship from last year.
