The varsity team lines up to say the pledge of allegiance at their meet against Port Washington. They then separated to prepare for their individual events. “I’m optimistic about the rest of the season and I hope that we continue to become better, even toward the end,” Drew Waller, senior, said.

Some teams rose and some teams fell in a turbulent week of Homestead sports, but all look ahead to victory this week in various match-ups and, for some, conference meetings.

Last week, the boys hockey team fell to Fond du Lac Springs by five points, with a final score of 7-2. The team now has an 11-10 record on the season and is currently ranked second in the North Shore Conference behind Cedarburg, but hopes to increase their win total by one when they face off against Arrowhead at the Ozaukee Ice Arena tomorrow at 8 p.m.

The girls basketball team will take on their coach’s former team, Nicolet, tomorrow at 5:45 p.m. in the Homestead field house, and then will compete against Cedarburg on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Homestead. Cedarburg is one of the only teams the girls lost to in their first round of match-ups, and they hope to outscore them this time around. They will also participate in a non-conference game on Saturday, competing against Plymouth at Homestead at 7:30 p.m.

The team scored a conference victory last week against Grafton, bringing their record so far this season to 13-3 with only six games left in their season.

“We [took] from that game that we’re tough, we get to loose balls and we have an active defense. It was a great win, but we have to move forward. We have to focus on getting better as we play against other great teams,” Coach Corey Wolf said of their win against the Black Hawks.

The boys basketball team will move forward to take on Nicolet at Homestead on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., and will face off against Cedarburg at Cedarburg High School on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The boys wrestling team put out strong performances last week and high rankings at the Wisconsin Dells Invitational over the weekend. Some highlights were Drew Waller’s second place finish in the 138-pound class, Doug Lennon’s second place finish in the 145-pound class, and Tyler Denmark’s third-place finish in the 170-pound class.

The team will have another conference match-up in their future as they will face off against Germantown at Homestead on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. They will then take part in their conference tournament on Friday at Nicolet at 4 p.m., matching up against various teams from the North Shore Conference.

The boys swim team will have their conference meet for the 2014 season this Saturday at Grafton High School. There, they will once again meet up with Cedarburg and hope for victory after a loss in early January against the Bulldogs.

The girls gymnastics team will face off against Shorewood at Homestead on Wednesday at 6 p.m. after taking on Menomonee Falls and Germantown last week.

The Lakeshore Lightning will take on an out-of-state team from Keeweenaw, Michigan this week at 6 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday after experiencing victories against Brookfield and Arrowhead last week.
